I don’t follow a strict low carb diet; however, I’ve found these recipes to be an excellent way to start my day. It’s safe to assume you’re not going to get those five servings of veggies in if you don’t start at breakfast, so it’s great to see such a focus on vegetables in a breakfast cookbook. We all know that mornings are a hectic time, but these tasty recipes often allow you to multi-task by using your oven to make breakfast while you shower, get the kids up, or whatever your morning routine requires.

I also really appreciate the kitchen tips and tricks that Douglas sprinkles throughout the book. I’m a pretty good home cook, but truthfully, a perfectly hard-boiled egg had eluded me…that is until I tried Douglas’s method. Even Martha Stewart didn’t get me to fluffy hard-boiled yolks, so that tip alone makes this book worth the price of admission for me!

Whether you’re making a smoothie to take for the road, a healthful sit down weekday breakfast, or an elegant weekend brunch, this book has you covered.

I’ve been low-carbing off and on (mostly on) for many years. A basic bacon-and-eggs breakfast has always been an easy option, and although I love it, I do sometimes wish I could find other favourites. I’ve never bought a cookbook on the Kindle, so this was a first for me, but I thought it was a good opportunity to see if I could expand my breakfast options. Because I can enlarge the font on the Kindle, I’ll be able to read the recipe easily when I glance over at it quickly, which I think it will make following recipes easier.

This book has some really great recipes. I like that a lot of them contain lots of veggies, something easy to overlook for anyone, low-carber or not, at breakfast. Douglas also shares a number of techniques for cooking the basic ingredients – how to boil the perfect egg, for example, or how to make an omelette, that less experienced cooks will find useful.

All of the recipes contain a complete nutritional breakdown (not just the carb count), which is helpful for people watching calories as well as carbs. There are recipes with varying carb counts that will fit a wide range of low carb eating plans – I really like the inclusion of a few recipes with sweet potato, and the smoothie recipes. There’s even a recipe for homemade breakfast sausage, which is so much tastier than (and just as easy as) the store-bought stuff!
